Dr. Brian Weiss and Past Life Regression

Past life regression therapy is a new technique in psychotherapy, where therapists tap into a person's past life/lives to deal with challenges in the present life. This form of therapy is based on the theory that traumatic past life events and experiences can be retained in cellular memory; it's thought that this holds the potential to affect one's quality of life in the present.

What does Past Life Regression Therapy Involve? In a typical past life regression therapy, the therapist leads a client into a relaxed trance-like state, through hypnosis or progressive relaxation. At this point, the therapist makes a suggestion to go back in time, to the point where the issue originated. The client might see an image or get a feeling that indicates a time, not in the present life time, but a previous life. The client usually remembers everything that occurs during the session.

Past life regression therapy is considered useful in people with phobias. For example, a person with fear of water may discover that she drowned in a past life, thereby providing an explanation for the fear of water in the current life. A session lasts between 60 and 90 minutes. Brian Weiss - a Popular Past Life Regression Therapist Brian Weiss M.D. is a licensed psychotherapist, and is also Chairman Emeritus of Psychiatry at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami.

In one of his traditional psychotherapy sessions, Dr. Weiss was astonished when his patient started to recall the source of her anxiety attacks and nightmares to past life traumas. This client also started to channel messages from Dr. Weiss's personal life and his dead son, which helped him work through his initial skepticism.

Eventually Dr.Weiss started to use past life regression therapy to help many clients deal with issues in the present life. He now focuses on writing, teaching and conducting experiential workshops and no longer sees private clients. How is Past Life Regression Therapy Different from a Past Life Consultation? Past life consultation with a psychic or intuitive is not the same as a past life regression. As psychics may not be therapists, they may not always have resources available. At times, a therapist can be instrumental in helping a client to work through unresolved issues.

A past life regression is more client driven, as the client recalls and experiences events from past life, while a consultation is usually a reading given by the psychic. Some psychics may recommend past life regression therapy as a follow up to their consultation session so their clients can get professional help to work through unresolved issues. Past life regression therapy could be useful than traditional therapy in situations involving phobias, addictions, psychosomatic disorders and many other types of emotional problems.

Past life regression sessions are also being used by people, to understand spiritual lessons and how previous lives help understand the bigger picture of one's life purpose.
